CHOPSS urges Gov’t to pay WAEC debt for WASSCE results release
The Conference of Heads of Private Second-Cycle Schools (CHOPSS) has called on the government to settle the debt owed to the West African Examinations Council to enable WAEC to release the 2024 WASSCE for School results.
In a statement sighted by Pretertiary.com, CHOPSS highlighted that the West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC) inability to release the WASSCE results stems from a GH₵118 million debt owed by the Ministry of Education.
The Conference of Heads of Private Second-Cycle Schools emphasized that students from private schools who sat for the examination and paid their WASSCE registration fees are unfairly affected by the delay in the release of the results.
CHOPSS noted that most universities in the country had scheduled their admission deadlines for January 2025, a worrying situation it said could jeopardise students’ prospects of timely enrollment in various tertiary institutions.
“The government’s failure to address this issue promptly is deeply unfair to private schools, parents, and students,” the Conference of Heads of Private Second-Cycle Schools stated in the press statement dated December 22, 2024.
The Conference therefore has urged the central government to urgently disburse the outstanding funds to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to facilitate the immediate release of the 2024 WASSCE School results.
As the WASSCE results delay has significant implications for university admissions across the country, the University of Education, Winneba, (UEW) has for instance set its direct application deadline for January 7, 2025.
Similarly, the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has indicated that its undergraduate admissions are still open for the 2024/2025 academic year, with applications accepted until further notice.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Gana Education Service (GES), Dr Eric Nkansah has expressed hope that the West African Examinations Council will release the WASSCE for School results before end of this year.
In an interview with JoyNews monitored by Pretertiary.com, the GES official said that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) had already been in contact with the Ministry of Education regarding the results.
“We are sure the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School results will be released possibly before the year ends,” the GES Director-General told the Accra-based media station.
Dr Eric Nkansah commenting on the delay in the release of the WASSCE School results said WAEC often sets targets for itself, however, unforeseen circumstances sometimes prevent them from meeting those deadlines.
The West African Examinations Council on August 5, 2024, commenced the administration of the 2024 edition of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates and ended it on Friday, September 20, 2024.
A total of 460,611 candidates made up of 212,954 boys and 247,657 girls, presented by 1,003 second-cycle schools participated in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination administrated at 1,000 centres across the country.
