EduWatch reveals amount to be spent on 2024 WASSCE for School
About GH¢170 million is expected to be spent on this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the Africa Education Watch (EduWatch) has disclosed.
The Executive Director of the education think tank in a social media post sighted by Pretertiary.com said the 2024 edition of the WASSCE for School cost covers registration, including written, oral and practical papers.
A total of 460,611 candidates representing 212,954 males and 247,657 females from 1,003 Senior High Schools across the country will participate in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School.
To be held at 1,000 centres across the country, the management of the not-for-profit-making organization in a statement sighted by Pretertiary.com said the figure is 2.66% higher than the 2023 entry figure of 448,674.
Since 2022, this academic year will be the third time Ghanaian candidates are writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination alone without other West African Examinations Council (WAEC) member counties.
Ghana is writing the WASSCE for School alone because the other four member countries of the WAEC — Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone and The Gambia — have returned to the May/June calendar after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The fact that it is Ghana only does not change anything about the examination. It is still the same process that we go through and the same conditions that go with the examination in the other member countries of WAEC,” John Kapi, a spokesman for the Council said in an interview.
Asked if there were going to be any differences, he said “The only difference, was the date for the WASSCE, but the processes, the nature of the examination and everything remained the same as those for the other member countries of WAEC.”
“There were about 15 subjects that officers compiled from outside the country and so it was still going to continue the same way. It is just that we have decided to push ours further so that our students can make time for it to be able to write and write it well
We still have the international panels that do the final marking schemes for the marking of the papers, then another international panel does the final awards which lead to the grading,” the Head of Public Affairs of WAEC stated.
The management of the Council following the conduct of the Ghana version of the International examination says necessary test security measures have been put in place to ensure that the examination is administered successfully.
“The Council wishes to caution all Heads of School, Supervisors and Invigilators to desist from this practice as all those involved will be dealt with according to the rules and regulations of the examination.
The Council will not hesitate to nullify the entries of such candidates and those who manage to sneak in will have their entire results cancelled if found out,” the not-for-profit-making organization said in a statement dated August 19, 2024.
The 2024 edition of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates which commenced with Visual Art Project work on August 5, 2024, will end on Friday, September 20, 2024.
