EduWatch to challenge inclusion of some private SHSs in Free SHS
Africa Education Watch (EduWatch) has announced that it will oppose the inclusion of some private Senior High Schools (private SHSs) in the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme.
In a social media post sighted by Pretertiary.com, EduWatch said, “We’ve sighted some prominent WASSCE tourism schools in the Private Schools’ free SHS list. We shall resist their inclusion.”
Early this year, the central government approved sixty (60) private secondary schools in the country to join the free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme for the 2025/2026 academic year.
In a social media post sighted by Pretertiary.com, the Head of Public Affairs Unit at GES, Daniel Fenyi, said the Free Senior High School policy was extended to private Senior High Schools (private SHSs) to end the double-track system.
According to him, the double-track system introduced to cater for increased enrollment in Senior High Schools under the free Senior High School programme disrupted the academic stability and quality of the country’s secondary education.
“For years, the double-track system disrupted academic stability and quality. As part of efforts to correct this inherited problem, GES has approved 60 resourced private SHSS to join the free SHS programme,” he said.
He added, “With determination, political will, and God’s guidance, we’re committed to restoring quality education, reverting to the traditional academic calendar, and bringing sanity back into our schools. We won’t disappoint Ghanaians.”
