GES asked to release BECE results before SHS/TVET selection starts
Africa Education Watch (EduWatch) has urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) to release this year’s BECE results before students who sat for the national examination select their preferred second-cycle school for computer placement.
According to EduWatch, the current system where students who sat for the examination are made to select schools before the results are released makes parents base their ward’s Senior High School (SHS/TVET) selection on anticipated BECE grades.
It said if the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results are released before the selection of Senior High Schools, it would rationalize the demand for ‘Category A’ schools and balance the school placement process.
“If BECE results are released before Senior High School/Technical and Vocational Education selection, it would rationalize the demand for some schools and create some equilibrium,” It said in a post sighted by Pretertiary.com.
EduWatch’s proposal comes after GES said this academic year’s selection of Senior High School (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for computer placement will commence after the 2024 BECE.
In a statement shared with Thisterm.com, the Ghana Education Service (GES) said it will communicate details of the 2024 second-cycle school selection process and computerized school selection and placement system in due course.
“Parents, candidates and the general public are informed that the school selection process will commence after the BECE. Details of the selection process will be communicated in due course,” the Service said in the press statement.
The 2024 edition of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School and Private Candidates commenced on Monday, July 8, 2024, and ended on Monday, July 15, 2024, at all the designated 2,123 Centres across the country.
A total of 569,095 candidates representing 282,648 males and 286,447 females from 19,506 Junior High Schools sat for the BECE for School while 1,366 students, comprising 735 males and 631 females participated in the BECE for Private candidates.
2,123 supervisors, 1,889 assistant supervisors and 19,973 invigilators according to the West African Examinations Council were tasked to ensure the smooth conduct of the BECE for School held in about 2,123 centres nationwide.
For the national examination for Private Candidates, the not-for-profit-making organization said fifteen (15) centres, mainly in the regional capitals were used for the Basic Education Certificate Examination for Private candidates.
