The management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) ahead of the the general election scheduled for December 7, 2024, has announced a special break for staff and students in various second-cycle schools in the country.
The break is to allow staff and eligible students aged 18 years and above to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming general election to be conducted by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC)
In a letter dated November 29, 2024, and sighted by Pretertiary.com, Ghana Education Service (GES) said all second-cycle schools across the country to close on Thursday, December 5, 2024.
This the management of the Education Service said will allow enough time for prospective teachers and students to travel to their constituencies to participate in the elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.
GES has also instructed Regional Directors of Education to ensure that heads of the second-cycle schools follow the directive to ensure every eligible voter can participate in shaping the future of Ghana through their votes.
This comes after the Ghana Education Service (GES) earlier authorised Senior High School (SHS) students aged 18 and above to take a four-day break from campus to enable them to participate in the voter registration process.
In a letter to all Regional Directors of Education and signed by the Acting Director of Schools and Instructions Division, Mr Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, the GES outlined that students can go home from May 7-10, 2022 to register to vote at their respective district offices.
“Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has granted permission to Senior High/Senior High Technical Schools (SHS/SHTS) students who have attained 18 and above to go home and partake in the limited voter registration exercise scheduled to commence on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, and ends on Monday, May 27, 2024,” the letter stated.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) letter further noted that according to the Electoral Commission, “the exercise will be conducted at its district offices and in difficult-to-access electoral areas across the country.”
“The students have been granted four days off from campus, effective Tuesday, May 7. 2024 to Friday, May 10, 2024, to partake in the exercise in line with the constitutional right of all Ghanaian citizens to exercise their franchise,” GES added.
The permission granted by the Ghana Education Service (GES) was aimed at allowing eligible second-cycle school students to exercise their civic duty to register and vote, in line with Ghana’s democratic principles.
