GH¢25m not adequate to facilitate WASSCE results release – WAEC
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s payment of GH¢25 million of the outstanding GH¢118 million debt it owed the Council to facilitate WASSCE results release.
A spokesperson for the not-for-profit organization speaking to the media said WAEC the payment is grossly inadequate to facilitate the release of the delayed 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
“Obviously, that [the GH¢25 million] was just a drop in the ocean as far as the amount of money required for the job we are supposed to do is concerned,” the Head of Public Relations of WAEC, John Kapi told journalists.
The spokesman revealed that WAEC owes its technicians tasked to repair the malfunctioning scanners essential for marking 2024 WASSCE for School objective sheets GH¢25 million, an amount that must be cleared before they can begin working on the equipment needed to process the results.
“If we decide to invite the technicians today or even tomorrow, all they are going to ask for is the outstanding payment and so all of that GH¢25 million will go,” Mr John Kapi explained, stressing the urgency of the situation.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education (MoE) following the release of the GH¢25 million has assured the general public, particularly students who sat for the examination that WAEC will soon release the 2024 WASSCE School results.
The Education Ministry spokesman, Kwasi Kwarteng in a social media post sighted by Pretertiary.com said the release of the GH₵25 million forms part of the government’s commitment to ensure WAEC releases the WASSCE results in due course.
“The Ministry of Education has released an additional GH₵25 million to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to support its operations and ensure the smooth and seamless continuation of marking activities.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has assured the Ministry that the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results will be released soon,” Kwasi Kwarteng said in the post.
WAEC earlier scheduled to release provisional results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School in the second week of December but had to postpone amid the breakdown of scanners for marking the objective sheets of the examination.
In a statement, it said the marking of the 2024 WASSCE School essay and practical components was completed on November 29, 2024, however, the scanning of objective test cards has been stalled due to the breakdown of scanners.
The West African Examinations Council on August 5, 2024, commenced the administration of the 2024 edition of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates and ended it on Friday, September 20, 2024.
A total of 460,611 candidates made up of 212,954 boys and 247,657 girls, presented by 1,003 second-cycle schools registered for the examination. The 2024 WASSCE for School was administrated at 1,000 centres across the country.
