Gov’t unfair to WAEC – Apaak says amid the WASSCE results delay

Dr Clement Abass Apaak, the Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, says the central government has not been fair to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) responsible for the conduct of the 2024 WASSCE for School Candidates.
Apaak’s comment follows the government’s inability to settle debts owed to the not-for-profit-making organization which has delayed the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School results.
In an interview monitored by Pretertiary.com, the Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee called out the government for attempting to shift the 2024 WASSCE results delay blame to the West African Exams Council.
“Government has not been fair to the West African Examination Council (WAEC). Government is trying to paint the picture as though the challenge with the delay of the WASSCE results originated from WAEC, when in fact it is government’s own inability to meet its obligations, to WAEC that caused the current problem,” he explained.
The Builsa South Member of Parliament speaking on Joy FM Newsnight urged the members of the general public to hold the central government accountable for the delay in the release of the examination results by WAEC.
We shouldn’t be cutting them any slack or giving them a pass. They are in government, and they have been collecting our taxes over the last eight years.
“They have been taking loans on our behalf, and they are obligated to meet their responsibilities as far as the people of Ghana and indeed our students and our educational system are concerned,” Dr Clement Abas Apaak told Joy FM.
Relatedly, the management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it is working round the clock to ensure the release of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results by the end of December 2024.
In a statement copied to by Pretertiary.com, the Council urged the Ministry of Education to release the outstanding balance to enable it to pay Supervisors, Invigilators, script checkers, and suppliers of examination materials.
“The Council is appealing to the Ministry of Education to release the outstanding balance to enable it pay Supervisors, Invigilators, script checkers, suppliers of examination materials and also meet other financial obligations.
The Council wishes all its stakeholders the Best of the Season and assures them of its commitment to the execution of its mandate despite the challenges,” WAEC said in the statement signed by its Public Relation Officer, John Kapi.
The final WASSCE results release date follows the release of GHC 35,000,000.00 from the Ministry of Education to WAEC to enable it to complete the scanning of the objective answer cards and conclude the processing of the results
“The West African Examinations Council wishes to inform its stakeholders that on December 25, 2024, it received a cheque for an additional amount of GHC 35,000,000.00 from the Ministry of Education to enable it to complete the scanning of the objective answer cards and conclude the processing of results for the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2024.
Consequently, the Council is working round the clock to ensure the results are released by the end of the month,” the not-for-profit-making organization (WAEC) disclosed in the statement dated December 27, 2024.
