MoE gives WAEC additional ₵35m to release 2024 WASSCE results
He indicated that technicians tasked to repair the malfunctioning of specialised scanners essential for marking the 2024 WASSCE for School objective sheets withdrew their services over debt of GH₵25 million WAEC owed them.
“We needed to repair our scanners because we owe the technicians GH¢25 million and they have withdrawn their services until we make some financial commitments,” John Kapi told several media stations in an interview.
Speaking to Adom News in an interview monitored by Pretertiary.com, John Kapi said currently, the central government has paid GH₵50 million to offset part of the GH¢118 million owed to the West African Council.
The Head of Public Affairs at WAEC amid the GH₵35 million payment has said current funds will help in getting the WASSCE results by the end of December 2024 although WAEC had earlier told candidates to expect it next year.
Meanwhile, the spokesman for the WAEC has cast doubt on the Council’s ability to meet the December 29 deadline for releasing the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School results.
The December 29, 2024 deadline for the not-for-money organization to release the provisional results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination was announced by the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.
The Education Minister after a visit to the offices of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) told journalists that the 2024 WASSCE for School Candidates results will be out on or before December 29, 2024.
“I came to apprise myself of developments in terms of the fact that they are working now through the holidays to get the results out on or before the 29th of this month. So I came and saw the workers working and currently close to 50% of the objectives have been marked,” the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum told the media.
But in an interview on Joy FM’s Midday news, the WAEC Head of Public Relations said the Council is facing significant challenges, primarily due to malfunctioning scanning machines used for processing objective answer cards.
He explained that only 45% of the work has been completed, with 55% still pending, adding that financial constraints hindering their progress.
The scanners are not working at full throttle. And so we would be glad if they release further funds for us to be able to, you know, fix, I mean, buy the parts, fix the machines, so that we can have more machines scanning, and the work can move on very fast. So this information, I am told, was made available to the minister.
Unfortunately, as I speak, we haven’t received any more funds, apart from the GH₵ 25 million we received on the 15th of December, 2024
Well, it’s four days to go. We have indicated the challenge we have is money. if it is made available for us, we will be able to get the machines working, we’ll recall all staff, and then all hands on deck. We are sure to be able to meet that deadline. But for now, I doubt if we can make it,” he stressed.
WAEC on August 5, 2024, commenced the administration of the 2024 edition of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates and ended it on Friday, September 20, 2024.
A total of 460,611 candidates made up of 212,954 boys and 247,657 girls, presented by 1,003 second-cycle schools sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination administrated at 1,000 centres across the country.
