NUGS suspends ‘demo’ over withheld WASSCE results release delay

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has suspended its planned demonstration against the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) over the withholding of results for some students who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School.
This comes after the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) issued a one-week ultimatum to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to release all withheld 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School results of some students.
Speaking to journalists, the Students Union said the delay in releasing the withheld WASSCE for School results is too long. It added that the Council’s refusal to adhere to the demand will lead to a nationwide demonstration.
“If WAEC fails to release the results within a week, we will take legal action and start protests across the country. We will make sure they do not feel comfortable in their offices,” the leader of the Ghana Students Union cautioned.
Scheduled for Tuesday, February 25, 2025, the demonstration was intended to pressure the Examinations Council to release the withheld WASSCE results of students many of whom face uncertainty regarding university admissions and their academic future.
However, just hours before the protest, the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) in a social media post sighted by Pretertiary.com said it had suspended following new commitments from the not-for-profit organization.
In a statement, NUGS explained that the decision came after an emergency meeting with WAEC officials and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), where WAEC assured that all pending withheld results would be released by March 1, 2025.
“This decision follows an emergency meeting convened at the instance of the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof. Ernest Kofi Davies with WAEC officials, including Dr. (Mrs.) Rosemond Wilson, Head of WAEC Ghana, Rev. Victor Brew, WAEC Head of Legal, and the NUGS President, Daniel Korley Botchway.
At the meeting, WAEC gave firm assurances that all pending withheld results would be released before 1* March 2025. In light of this commitment. NUGS has resolved to suspend the planned demonstration while monitoring WAEC’s adherence to the agreed timeline,” the Union said in the statement.
The Students Union further disclosed that the Ghana Education Service (GES) Director General has also invited them to submit policy proposals on reforms regarding the handling of examination malpractice cases.
The National Students Union has cautioned that should the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) fail to meet the 28th February deadline, it will not hesitate to take further action in defence of affected students.
“We call on all students, parents, and stakeholders to remain calm as we actively engage the management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to ensure their commitment is fulfilled
Students and the general public with proposals on how to improve the conduct of exams and handle malpractice should submit same to secretariat@nugs.org.gh,” it stated.
