WAEC ‘denies’ MoE’s claim WASSCE results will be out before 2025
The management of the not-for-profit organization (WAEC) says the chances that the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results will be out on or before December 29, this year are minimal.
WAEC’s comment comes after the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum addressing the media assured that the West African Examinations Council on December 28 or 29, 2024 will release the WASSCE School results.
After a brief visit to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) offices, the Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, told journalists that the results of the 2024 WASSCE would be released by December 29.
“This morning, we visited WAEC and we have been taken around and they are working and by December 29 or before, the results of our exams will be out so that the universities can go about their job of making sure our students will also be given admission to pursue their various degree and diploma programmes
I was here with the Director-General of Ghana Education Service, and we are satisfied with the level of preparation and the work being done by WAEC, and we are grateful for their service and for the fact that even during this break, they have staff here working around the clock to ensure that the results will be released for our students to continue with their education,” he told journalists.
The Minister in Charge of Education told the media that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) was finalising the WASSCE for School marking process and working to ensure the results were published on time.
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum highlighted the government’s support in alleviating some of the not-for-money-making organization’s financial challenges, enabling the council to focus on accurate marking and timely releases.
But, speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Head of Public Relations of WAEC, John Kapi said his outfit will not be able to release 2024 WASSCE for School results on the fixed date announced by the Education Minister.
This the Examinations Council’s spokesman said is because the amount it awaits to enable it to fix the broken down scanners, conclude scanning of the objective test answer cards, and then process the results is yet to be received.
He said that the assurance by Dr Yaw Adutwum that there had been an additional release of GHc25 million to WAEC for its operational activities and that it had assured that results would be released before or by December 29, 2024, is inaccurate.
“Without any formal meeting with the management team of WAEC, he addressed the media present, giving them assurances that results would be released by December 29,” the WAEC spokesperson told the Daily Graphic.
Kapi added “We wish to state that apart from a cheque for GH25 million that was issued on December 18, 2024, no further releases out of the outstanding GHc118 million have been made.
The Council awaits the release of the additional GHc35 million it has requested from the Ministry of Education to enable it to fix the broken-down scanners, conclude scanning of the objective test answer cards, and then process the results.
The West African Examinations Council on August 5, 2024, commenced the administration of the 2024 edition of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates and ended it on Friday, September 20, 2024.
A total of 460,611 candidates made up of 212,954 boys and 247,657 girls, presented by 1,003 second-cycle schools registered for the examination. The 2024 WASSCE for School was administrated at 1,000 centres across the country.
