WAEC explains meaning of 2025 WASSCE, BECE result status terms

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has explained the meaning of the result status terms candidates sometimes encounter when checking their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results online.
The result status indicates whether the management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for one reason or another other will release the examination result of a candidate or not.
The result status terms also help candidates to know their fate after the results of the examination they sat for have been released, particularly for those whose results are canceled due to involvement in examination malpractice.
Meaning of WASSCE and BECE result status terms
When checking your West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results, you might come across certain terms below.
1. Outstanding: This means your result in one or more subjects is still being processed. It usually happens when a student is marked present, but the marks are not yet finalized.
An official of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in a discussion with Pretertiary.com said this could be due to an extra answer sheet not properly attached or other technical issues.
2. Withheld: This occurs when many students from a center have similar answers, suggesting malpractice. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) investigates the situation. If malpractice is confirmed, the results are seized and are released based on the outcome of the investigations.
3. Held/Pending: Similar to Withheld, but different, this is typically linked to a specific candidate or a center found to be involved in malpractice. It can include written remarks in your answer booklet. Just like Withheld, the result may be released or not, depending on the investigation’s outcome.
4. Result Not Available: This may be due to a Delay in uploading results, or the Wrong exam type or year selected during checking of the result. Check back later or retry with the correct details.
5. Indebted: In this case, a candidate may owe his or her school. When this happens, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) releases the result for such a candidate until the debt is cleared.
6. Canceled: This means the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed malpractice or a major examination offense. In this case, the examination result will not be released.
