WAEC to release WASSCE results soon amid GH₵2m debt payment
The management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it will release the 2024 WASSCE results soon online to prospective students who sat for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
WAEC assurance comes after the government through the Ministry of Education released an amount of GH₵25 million of the outstanding GH₵118 million debt owed to it to facilitate the process of the examination results.
A spokesman of the Education Ministry in a social media post sighted by Pretertiary.com said the release of the GH₵25 million forms part of the government’s commitment to ensure WAEC releases the WASSCE results soon.
“The Ministry of Education has released an additional GH₵25 million to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to support its operations and ensure the smooth and seamless continuation of marking activities.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has assured the Ministry that the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results will be released soon,” Kwasi Kwarteng said in the post.
A spokesperson for WAEC, John Kapi, confirmed the payment and said his outfit would use the money to pay technicians to repair faulty scanners crucial for marking the 2024 WASSCE for School objective sheets.
He indicated that technicians tasked to repair the malfunctioning of specialised scanners essential for marking the 2024 WASSCE for School objective sheets withdrew their services over debt of GH₵25 million WAEC owed them.
“We needed to repair our scanners because we owe the technicians GH¢25 million and they have withdrawn their services until we make some financial commitments,” John Kapi told several media stations in an interview.
In line with the MoE spokesperson, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr Eric Nkansah, has expressed hope that the not-for-profit organization will release the WASSCE School results before the end of 2024.
In an interview with JoyNews monitored by Pretertiary.com, the GES official said that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) had already contacted the Ministry of Education regarding the results.
“We are sure the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School results will be released possibly before the year ends,” the GES Director-General told the Accra-based media station.
Dr Eric Nkansah commenting on the delay in the release of the WASSCE School results said WAEC often sets targets for itself, however, unforeseen circumstances sometimes prevent them from meeting those deadlines.
