WAEC warns students against joining rogue WASSCE, BECE groups

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has cautioned candidates to sit for this year’s national or international examination to desist from joining online WASSCE and BECE groups created by rogue websites or individuals
Speaking to Daily Graphic, an official of the not-for-profit-making organization urged students to avoid websites and social media platforms created to entice candidates to download WAEC-confirmed topics or join their platforms.
“All such websites are rogue websites because the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has not confirmed any topics in any subject to anyone. Candidates should just be wary of rogue websites,” the WAEC official said.
Relatedly, the management of the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) has cautioned members of the general public, particularly final-year students not to engage persons who claim to upgrade their examination results.
In a blog post sighted by EducationWeb.com.gh, WAEC said some fraudsters who claim to have access to its database contact candidates with the promise of “upgrading” their results for a fee payable through mobile money transfers.
“The Management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) wishes to alert its public to the activities of certain persons who introduce themselves as workers of WAEC and also claim to have access to its results database.
These fraudsters contact prospective candidates with the promise of “upgrading” their results for a fee payable through mobile money transfers. We urge the public and students to desist from that” the Council cautioned.
WAEC assured that its results database is well secured with military-grade encryption and as such, all forged WASSCE, BECE for School and other WAEC results can be detected by its state-of-the-art confirmation/verification system.
“Institutions and organisations are advised to confirm or verify results presented to them directly from the Council or access the confirmation/verification service online at https://www.waecgh.org,” the Examinations Council added.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) said it has collaborated with various security agencies in the country to arrest unscrupulous individuals and fraudsters who take advantage of students during the release of results.
“We will urge members of the public to report the activities of these fraudsters to the police or to the nearest West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Office. Any person found culpable will be dealt with accordingly,” It noted.
The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is both for certification and selection into Senior High Schools and Technical Institutes in Ghana.
The results of the examination are based on Continuous Assessment and the external examination. The Continuous Assessment forms 30% whilst the external examination forms 70% of the total assessment.
Candidates in the third year of Junior High Schools (JHSs) approved by the Ghana Education Service (GES) are eligible to register to take part in this examination.
Candidates are graded based on their performance in the external examination (objective and written) and the Continuous (Internal) Assessment marks provided by the schools.
A nine-point numerical scale is used in grading the candidates, with Grade 1 denoting the highest performance and Grade 9 the lowest.
The results of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) are released in August to enable successful and qualified candidates to enter Senior High Schools and Technical Institutes at the beginning of the academic year.
The results lists are sent to the participating schools, whilst each candidate receives a statement of results through his/her school. Candidates can also check their results online with an access card at www.waecgh.org.
The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is administered to school candidates in the third year of Senior High School and to private candidates. The examination is for both selection to tertiary institutions and for certification.
