WASSCE results date claims could affect exam’s credibility – WAEC
The West African Examinations Council says the December 29, 2024 date announced by the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum as the 2024 WASSCE results date could negatively affect the credibility of the examination.
In an interview with Accra-based Starr FM monitored by Pretertiary.com, the spokesperson for the not-for-profit organisation (WAEC) said that the Education Minister’s statement was misleading and inaccurate.
Mr John Kapi revealed that although the Minister had visited the WAEC office and observed some of the work being done, there was no formal discussion or assurance from WAEC regarding the WASSCE results release date.
“The Minister of Education came there. He was taken around by the head of office, shown the broken-down machines, the ones that were working, but there was no formal meeting.
He stepped out and spoke to the media, claiming that we said we would release the West African Senior School Certificate Examination results by December 28 or 29, but that is factually incorrect,” he told Starr FM.
The WAEC spokesman further criticized the Education Minister’s approach, describing it as “scandalous” for making an unsanctioned announcement that could potentially affect the credibility of the examination process.
The Head of Public Affairs at the West African Exams Council emphasized that such actions undermined the seriousness of the examination results and raised concerns about the potential impact on the future of the candidates.
“We are also Ghanaians. We have staff whose children have written the exams, and we are all waiting for the results to be released. This is not just affecting third parties, but us as well. We should all be honest with the public about the reality of the situation,” Kapi stated.
WAEC’s comment comes after the Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, told journalists after a visit to the Examinations Council’s offices that the WASSCE School results will be released on or before December 29 this year.
“This morning, we visited WAEC and we have been taken around and they are working and by December 29 or before, the results of our exams will be out so that the universities can go about their job of making sure our students will also be given admission to pursue their various degree and diploma programmes
I was here with the Director-General of Ghana Education Service, and we are satisfied with the level of preparation and the work being done by WAEC, and we are grateful for their service and for the fact that even during this break, they have staff here working around the clock to ensure that the results will be released for our students to continue with their education,” the Education Minister told the media.
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum Adutwum also noted that about 50% of the 2024 WASSCE for School Candidates objective scripts had been marked, and efforts were being made to meet the deadline despite the holiday period.
The West African Examinations Council on August 5, 2024, commenced the administration of the 2024 edition of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates and ended it on Friday, September 20, 2024.
A total of 460,611 candidates made up of 212,954 boys and 247,657 girls, presented by 1,003 second-cycle schools registered for the examination. The 2024 WASSCE for School was administrated at 1,000 centres across the country.
